You may think that when people speak of exploding smart phone batteries they are just scare mongering, unfortunately this is an actual danger that could cause much harm and in severe cases death. Stanford Associate Professor Yi Cui and other professors are attempting to create a “smart” battery.  They are researching a way for lithium-ion batteries to give a warning before they explode.

Lithium-ion batteries are made up of several components and can burst into flames when the polymer within the battery gets pierced. The scientists researching this have come up with a way to warn that the polymer has been pierced. Trying to understand this is giving me flashbacks to chemistry class but basically the battery itself won’t be “smart”. It will need some form of device to actually read the voltage inside the battery to warn the user.

There are more and more devices being made that use lithium-ion batteries. From laptops to smartphones and even the power bank charges that we here at Cubic Promote supply. Luckily we haven’t had any complaints about our custom power bank chargers exploding due to over use!

We all know the importance and necessity of preventing explosions within airplane engines which also use lithium ion batteries. And so we can see the huge importance of this invention.
