Since the 1960s sun tanning in the Western world has been on trend. Throughout the 70s and 80s sporting a deep, almost sun burnt, tan was very stylish. Since the 90s, especially in Australia, we've learnt the hard way about the extensive damage long stints in the sun can do your skin and health. Gone are the days of omitting sun screen in favor of a fast and deep tan. We now know that that hot, sensitive and painful redness of freshly sunburn skin can have long lasting effects like skin cancer. Additionally to the risk of skin cancer, being sun burnt is extremely unpleasant.

So how can you protect yourself? Slip. Slop. slap. The iconic and international sun protection campaign conceptualized in the late 80s is now common place in the Aussie psyche.

So make sure you cover up well, wear a hat and most importantly slop on some sunscreen. Here are tips:

Tips for Applying Sunscreen:

  • Apply to clean and dry skin at least 30 minutes before sun exposure to maximize protection
  • Cover all parts of your body that are exposed - including your ears and toes!
  • Apply Evenly and reapply once every 2 hours and after swimming/exercise
  • Remember to stay out of the sun when its hottest: Between 12 - 2 pm

  • Use a gentle moisturizer, after sun lotion or Aloe Vera while damp
  • Drink plenty of water to avoid sun stroke
