Did you know the design of the takeaway coffee cup that you sipped from this morning is a design that dates back to nearly 30 years ago! That is 3 decades and not a single thing has changed from the original design.

The original coffee cup design is simple and utilitarian, but only to a point. Slight movements sends liquid bursting through the lid. The liquid then gets caught into a groove indented onto the cup. This essentially represents your last line of defence against wet hot liquid from spilling onto you. Not very comforting at all.

Another design fault on the current coffee cup is that steam is trapped inside the cup. This means that premium coffee after a while will taste no different to cheap flavourless coffee.

A Modern Take on Custom Coffee Cups

There have been many attempts to create a better cup. However none have really grabbed my attention until now. An American company called Vaporpath has launched a product called the Viora Lid. As the name implies the key change is in the design of the lid. So how does it work? Well key features of this design include:

- The lid has been described to be shaped like a baseball stadium.
- Any spills that occur are internally funneled back into the cup. Not only that but the shape of the mouth piece is designed to allow minimum spillage with any given shake. Just see the difference on the image below comparing this new lid with an old traditional one.

- The design allows the user the experience of drinking more naturally akin to using a regular mug.
- Huge ventilation hole allows steam to escape. Making the cup more safe to drink and more flavour in the form of aroma.
- A vertical opening allows a more natural drinking motion.

This Viora Lid design we think is rather special! We cannot wait to see these lids in our local cafe or on any given promotional mug soon!
