As a regular Tweeter we realize the power that Twitter can wield. With around 650 million users, Twitter is a social media phenomenon, putting us ordinary folk in touch with the most famous people in the world. You can tell Kim Kardashian that you didn't particularly care for her wedding dress. You can pass on putting tips to Tiger Woods. And you can suggest to Miley Cyrus that she should put her tongue back in her mouth before the wind changes.

Celebrities love Twitter, and that's no surprise given that it is an easy way to increase your profile and promote yourself in front of hundreds of millions of people. What is surprising is that some very unlikely people, and organisations, use Twitter to spread the word for marketing use or otherwise...and here are six of them.

 Unlikely Twitterers

The British Monarchy. One is not sure if Queen Elizabeth herself is hands on in the updating of this Twitter account, or if one gets one to do it for her. And as yet, there has been no selfie of the Queen with a corgi. This account is very much what you you'd expect from Mr and Mrs Average actually – lots of updates on what's happening at home, or homes, and jolly nice stories about what the family is up to.

Pope Francis. Been blessed today? Send a message to Pope Francis and he might just oblige. Pope Francis has brought the age-old Vatican into the ultra-modern Twittersphere, and it seems he has inspired his predecessor to do the same. Yes, Pope Benedict is now on Twitter, presumably telling us what he's getting up to during his retirement. @BritishMonarchy

The Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama must be the most quoted person in the world. Words of wisdom and bumper sticker philosophy are all attributed to him, it seems. But how can you be sure this guidance is from the man himself? Maybe it's from Bono? Or Joan Rivers? You can now be sure, and get it straight from His Holiness, thanks to his official Twitter account, which has nearly nine million followers. A not so modest following for this very humble man. @DalaiLama

Elvis Presley. 'ELVIS IS ALIVE!!!' is not a myth. The King lives on, with a regularly updated Twitter account. How he finds the time in between flipping burgers at a truck stop in Arizona is beyond us, but there you go. Love Me, Twitter, Love Me Do.... @ElvisPresley

Hugh Hefner. Good old Hugh has a devoted following, most of them male and attracted by his titillating posts. Hugh's account is a really nostalgic and fascinating affair, featuring many photos of a young Hefner, and the cream of Hollywood, from the late 60s and early 70s. The Playboy Mansion was certainly Party Central in the day, and Hefner can't help but show it off. Maybe not the most family-friendly Twitter account but one of the more interesting... @hughhefner

New York City Sanitation. You've always wanted to know all about sanitation in The Big Apple haven't you? Now you can get every dirty detail about refuse and recycling in New York City thanks to this riveting and exciting account. Well, it ain't that exciting, but if you live in New York it's probably a good thing to know if your garbage is going to be picked up on Independence Day. @NYCSanitation
