The Significance of the Made in Australia Symbol
Last Updated: 23 June 2025
There’s something powerful about seeing the green and gold kangaroo on a product—it instantly signals trust, quality, and homegrown pride. At Cubic Promote, we’re proud to support local industry by offering various promotional items that carry the Made in Australia symbol. More than just a label, this mark reflects a commitment to Australian craftsmanship, ethical production, and supporting local communities. This article explores why this symbol matters and what it means for your brand.
Country of Origin Labelling: A National Symbol
The pride we feel as Australians when we see the Made in Australia symbol is akin to the sense of accomplishment one feels after completing a DIY project. It’s not just about a product—it’s about ownership, heritage, and the story behind its creation. We’re proud of what we make and our resilience and self-reliance in crafting products right here at home.
The Made in Australia logo is more than just a branding tool; it’s a national symbol that reflects our nation’s strength, independence, and high manufacturing standards. Displaying this symbol is a point of pride for Australians and a way to tell the world about the quality and craftsmanship that define our products.
What Is the Made in Australia Symbol?
The Made in Australia symbol, formally known as the Australian Made, Australian Grown (AMAG) logo, is a registered certification mark. It assures consumers that a product has met the rigorous standards set by the Australian government and is either made or grown in Australia. Five distinct descriptors may appear alongside the logo:
- Australian Made: The product underwent its last substantial transformation in Australia.
- Australian Grown: The product’s essential ingredients were grown in Australia, and almost all processing was done locally.
- Product of Australia: The product is made entirely from Australian-sourced ingredients, and the production process occurs within the country.
- Australian Seafood: The seafood product was produced or harvested in Australia, with all processing carried out within the country.
- Australian: A designation that applies only to export markets, where the product must meet the criteria of one of the above claims.
Importantly, the Made in Australia symbol can only be used on goods (physical products), not services.
How to Verify if a Product Is Truly Made in Australia
It’s important to note that not all products sold in Australia can be classified as “Australian-made.” To bear the Made in Australia logo, a product must undergo its last substantial transformation within the country.
What exactly does “substantial transformation” mean? For example:
- Cotton fabric imported from overseas is not considered “Australian-made” if it is sold without any further processing.
- However, if that cotton fabric is turned into a personalised tee shirts, it can be classified as Australian-made, as the transformation occurred in Australia.
Additionally, not all ingredients or components of a product need to be sourced from Australia. The key requirement is that the final transformation, such as assembly or manufacture, must occur in Australia.
Who Can Use the Made in Australia Symbol?
Not everyone can use the Made in Australia symbol. Before applying the logo to their products, businesses must obtain a licence from Australian Made Campaign Ltd (AMCL). This licensing process involves verifying whether the product meets the guidelines for using the logo. After an agreement with the Australian government in 2002, AMCL is responsible for administering the logo.
