A jute bag is made from natural plant fibre extracted from the outer stem (bast) of the jute plant, primarily grown in Bangladesh and India. The fibre is stripped, dried, spun into coarse yarn, and woven into fabric. This fabric is then cut and stitched to produce jute bags used for shopping, events, and promotional purposes.
Our experience with jute bags
At Cubic Promote, jute bags are one of our top five most supplied promotional bag materials, used extensively for conferences, expos, retail giveaways, and sustainability-focused campaigns. We’ve worked with different jute weights, weaves, and print methods over many years, which gives us practical insight into durability, branding clarity, freight behaviour, and real-world usability—not just theory. Jute Bags are our 4th best-selling type of promotional bag behind:
How to Create A Jute Bag (The Process)
To create a Jute Bag, the first thing that is needed is the stem of a Jute plant. Only the outer skin is used. This type of plant is mainly exported from Bangladesh, and the crop is quite durable and easy to grow, even with limited fertilizer and insecticides. Generally, just natural rain, sunshine, and common soil are required. This plant is then processed and used to create the material.

The good thing about Jute bags compared to other fabrics is that it is extremely durable. It will take an enourmous amount of stress pressure to tear a Jute Bag which makes it very durable and resistant to “stretching,” which effects the aesthetic of a bag and how durable it is. Best of all the production process required means that it is very sustainable and less resource intensive when producing the fabric.
Today, jute bags can be found as:
- Super market Eco Bags
- 2Conference bags
- Expo bags
They are a great promotional item because they are not only eco-friendly but they also retain their shape a lot better than other bags leading to a typically longer use lifespan. The Jute fabric is also quite flexible in creating both a course fabric as well as a very fine fabric which is so smooth that it has been used as a substitute for silk. This allows the Jute bag to be created in many different variations in both quality and aesthetics to suit a wide range of use.
Jute vs other promotional bag materials
| Material | Made from | Durability | Sustainability | Look & feel | Water resistance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jute | Natural plant fibre | Very high | Excellent (biodegradable) | Earthy, textured | Very poor |
| Calico (cotton) | Cotton plant | Medium | Good | Soft, flexible | Poor |
| Non-woven | Synthetic plastic | Medium | Low–moderate | Smooth, plastic-like | Good |
| Nylon | Synthetic fibre | High | Low | Sleek, modern | Excellent |
Limitations
- Not water-resistant: absorbs water quickly
- Heavier than cotton or non-woven at the same size
- Coarse texture may not suit all brand aesthetics
- Not ideal for outdoor events or rainy conditions
Branding and print considerations
- Best print colours: Black, Pantone Red, Pantone Green
- Bold, simple logos perform best due to textured surface
- Fine detail and gradients are not recommended
- Screen printing is the most common and durable method
