Why Steph Curry’s Golden State Custom Printed Jersey Costs $180 in Australia

Today, we’re talking about branded sportswear, sports licensing, and the costs associated with fan merchandise. Custom Merch likes football and basketball jerseys. If you’ve ever wondered why a team jersey can cost anywhere from $150 to $180, we’ve got the answers for you. We know the answers. Why? Well, we supply custom branded apparel for a few of the major 1st Tier Aussie sports teams.

To answer the question, I’ve brought in Wendy Lee, our resident expert in sports merchandising and custom branding for apparel for sports teams across Australia. Wendy’s knowledge of the industry will give us a clear picture of where that $180 jersey price tag comes from.

Why Do Fan Jerseys Cost So Much?

I recently had an experience that made me think about the high price of sports jerseys. I took my 15-year-old son to a rugby game, and while we were there, I had to buy him some merchandise. The Roosters won, by the way, but I was shocked at how expensive the gear was. Coming from the apparel industry, I know the underlying merchandise costs, but I couldn’t help but wonder why a simple team jersey costs $150 to $180.

I even brought one of the purchased jerseys to the podcast to show Wendy and get her insight. This is a Golden State Warriors jersey featuring Steph Curry, and it cost me $180. After seeing that price tag, I had to ask: where does all that money go?

The True Cost of a $180 Jersey: Wendy Lee Explains

Wendy has worked with big and small sports teams across Australia, helping them navigate the complex world of branded products such as sports items. Wendy explained that while the production cost of a Golden State Warriors jersey might seem like it should be cheaper, a lot more goes into the final price than just the fabric and stitching. Here’s how the cost breaks down work:

  • Production Cost: The Jersey costs only around $20 to produce.
  • Retail Markup: The price jumps significantly once the jersey lands in Australia. Around $90 of that $180 price tag goes to the retailer’s markup. This markup covers rent, staff salaries, and operational costs.
  • License Fees: $30 of that price goes directly to sports licensing fees, which cover licensing the NBA logo, Golden State Warriors branding, and Steph Curry’s name. The license fee doesn’t go entirely to the team or player. The NBA gets a chunk of that, and then a portion is passed on to the team and player based on individual agreements.
  • Marketing & Influencer Costs: Makes up the rest of the costs. Sports teams often hire influencers or use social media to promote jerseys and gear. These marketing efforts can drive up the overall cost of the product,
but they help generate demand for the merchandise.

Why Do We Pay More for Star Player Jerseys?

As Wendy pointed out, the cost of a Steph Curry jersey isn’t just about the physical product. The popularity and marketability of star players affect the final price of the merchandise. If you’re purchasing a jersey from a big-name player like Steph Curry, part of that cost goes toward the player’s license fee, which can be higher for well-known stars than for lesser-known players. This dynamic isn’t unique to the NBA. The same principle applies across Australian sports. Whether you’re purchasing a jersey in the A-League, NRL, or Super Rugby, the price will often be higher for jerseys featuring star players. Licensing agreements and the demand for these items drive up the cost.

What Else Contributes to the Price?

We’ve covered the basics of production and licensing costs, but there are a few more elements that add to the overall price of a sports jersey. Wendy shared some insights into the logistics and the final sale price:

  • Shipping and Logistics: Shipping costs to bring jerseys from the manufacturer to retailers in Australia also add to the price. This includes freight fees, customs duties, and import taxes.
  • Marketing Campaigns: Jerseys often become a must-have item because of strategic marketing campaigns. This includes working with social media influencers, advertisements, and campaigns that make these jerseys even more desirable.
  • Retailer Profit Margins: Finally, the retail price isn’t just about covering costs; it’s also about generating a profit for retailers. With the high markup, retailers ensure that they can sustain their operations. Running a business in Australia can be very expensive for retailers.

The Bigger Picture: Counterfeit Merchandise Understanding the True Cost of Fan Mercandise

In recent years, counterfeiters have stepped up their game, producing high-quality replicas that rival the authentic versions. Some of these counterfeits are so good that they’ve surpassed the original in terms of material quality.

In future blogs, we’ll discuss the counterfeit merchandise industry and explore how these knock-offs compare to the real deal. We’ll even cut up a few jerseys on camera to show you the differences between authentic and counterfeit products.

So, the next time you purchase a sports jersey, you’ll have a much better understanding of where that $180 price tag is coming from. The cost breakdown includes everything from production to licensing, marketing, and retailer markups.
