We love hearing about any recycling news that helps make formerly discarded products into something useful again. So we were excited to hear about the Aussie streetwear brand ALCH, whose goal is to repurpose products in unique new ways to produce wearable clothing that packs a real punch. The results, unsurprisingly, are rather eye-catching!

Designer Alexandra Hackett, who is behind ALCH, is heavily invested in the idea of reusing old packaging for products (as well as old products themselves) and turning them into wearable clothing fit for a runway. While most people would consider the branded tote bags their Nike clothes come in to be garbage, in the hands of Hackett this trash becomes a variety of treasures.

The theme for most of Hackett's work with ALCH is challenging the idea that products should only have a single use. To this end, she creates tracksuit pants from old branded plastic bags, shirts out of excess Nike sock stock, and a variety of pants and vests made from old printed duffle bags. Even the accessories in her range are produced from upcycled items (such as earrings made from Apple earbuds, or handbags made from Nike sports bags).

The completed clothing retains its old promotional branding, but the original product has been totally reimagined into something new. Rather than getting caught up on the idea that products can have only one purpose, this quirky label brings branded fashion full circle and makes us challenge what we do with our old clothing and accessories. When upcycling isn't practical for your brand, there are always product options available that help minimise impact on the environment (such as non-woven bags made from recycled materials). The important thing is to start thinking outside the box! :)
