We all know that throwing stuff out will create all sorts of bad consequences to the environment. Recycling is okay, but a lot of carbon emission is still created in converting raw material back into brand new products. This is why upcycling is gaining more popularity. Essentially what upcycling means is that it is using used products but in a different way of application. Coca-Cola realized this, and it realized that many of its product packaging find themselves used in an alternate way. So what better way than to create a marketing campaign based on up-cycling?

Coca Cola together with marketing powerhouse Ogilvy & Mather in China created a new campaign called "2nd Lives," The campaign aims at using old Coca Cola bottles in a creative useful way, long after its contents have been consumed. The result is a set of promotional products that turn empty bottles into extremely smart useful products.

The campaign produced 40,000 sets initially which are given away as free promotional gifts to Coca Cola customers in Vietnam. Boy, would I love to see something like this done in Australia. Unfortunately at the moment Coca Cola has announced only plans to do this marketing campaign within Asia, where re-use of Coke bottles for other uses is a very popular thing to do compared to Australia.
