In celebration of Australian day, and that proud, down to earth, humorous and often outright bewildering array that is Australian pop culture, Melbourne based illustrator Aaron Tyler created some custom coins with some designs that were rather more fantastical than the current lot. Instead, the "Straya Cash" featured celebrities, objects, and characters who are intrinsic to Australia popular culture. Largely in hilarious tongue in cheek ways.

5 cents

Muriel's Wedding, and potentially Australia's most famous musical export; AC/DC. While Acca Dacca's presence is well deserved, I'd probably have picked The Castle instead. Honestly the fact that there's no Castle? Tell him he's dreaming.

10 cents

The "waiting for a mate" internet meme meets that most suspicious of "Asian" cuisine, the dim sim. You'll probably never find it in an actual Chinese restaurant, but they're a famed part of the humble chip shop menu.

20 cents

The second most famous fictional Australian bushman Russell Coight, (the first being Mick Dundee of course) and that proud institution of Australia's casual attitude towards alcohol, the slightly seedy, but ever popular goon bag.

50 cents

Popular comedic duo Hamish and Andy, as well as the unfortunate Schapelle Corby, whose legal problems dominated Australian news for quite some time.

1 dollar

Legendary racecar driver Peter Brock as well as the increasingly popular Australian actress and comedienne Rebel Wilson.

2 dollars

Adam Goodes, one of our most prominent Australian Aboriginal athletes, as well as old school Cricketer David "Boonie" Boon. A man from a simpler time where athletic bodies weren't a requirement for being on the cricket team, but having incredible facial hair was.

Makes you proud to be Australia doesn't it? I'd happily replace the coinage with the designs above.
