Are you up on your modern branding knowledge? What about some of the great marketing campaigns launched over the past 15 years? One memorable use of logo branding that sticks in our minds here in the Cubic Promote office is KFC's 2006 decision to create a gigantic replica of their Colonel Sanders logo in Nevada.

  1. KFC created a massive logo visible from space.
  2. Readymix logo in Australia was even larger.
  3. Essential elements for effective logo branding.

One of the Largest Logo Brands of All Time

In 2006 KFC decided to launch a brand new, slightly hipster-esque version of their classic logo featuring company founder, Colonel Sanders. While Google Earth promotions are pretty commonplace these days, 12 years ago they were a bit of a big deal which is why KFC decided to promote their new logo by branding it right in the middle of the Nevada desert.

Created from tens of thousands of coloured tiles, the completed logo measured 87,500 square feet in size (meaning it was big enough to hold all the heads from Mount Rushmore and have room left to spare). It was biiiiig! So big, the company dubbed this massive promotional logo the "Face from Space" as it was visible from orbit, not to mention via Google Earth. Definitely larger than the average logo you see on promotional products.

But Is It The First Logo Visible From Space?

Contrary to claims, the KFC rebrand logo constructed in 2006 (and dismantled six months later, at the end of the awareness campaign) is not the first logo brand large enough to be visible from space, that honour goes to an Australian brand, oddly enough! Created in 1965 by a construction team working on sealing the Eyre Highway through the outback Nullabor Plain, the Readymix logo was the largest lettering in the world between 1972-1992 according to the Guinness Book of Records!

While the KFC logo was made from many thousands of tiles, the Readymix logo was carved into the limestone ground of the outback. These days it has long since faded from clear sight (as carving needs to be regularly carved then re-carved or it fills in and becomes less visible) but if you're still keen on checking out the original you can check out the faded remnants on Google Earth!

While these gigantic logo displays have faded from view, both the KFC and Readymix logo brands in the desert remain memorable in the public mind. So perhaps sometimes bigger branding is better!

Key Logo Branding Components

Creating an effective logo brand is a crucial component of successful marketing. There are many essential elements to consider when creating your brand, including:

  • Colour: The color you choose plays a vital role in communicating your brand's message and tone. Consider the feelings and associations different colors evoke before choosing your brand's color.
  • Typography: The font you choose can make your brand appear classic, modern, or playful. Ensure that the typography you choose is legible, and it conveys your brand's personality.
  • Simplicity: Keeping your logo simple and clear can help ensure that your brand is memorable and recognizable. Make sure your logo is easy to read and can be scaled to different sizes.
  • Unique design: Your brand should be unique and recognizable. Consider creating a distinctive design using shapes, symbols, or letters, which can help distinguish your brand from others.

At Cubic Promote, we ensure that your branding is consistent with your style and identity, ensuring that your brand is accurately reflected on our promotional products.

Summary

In conclusion, KFC's decision to create a massive logo visible from space was a bold marketing move that caught people's attention. However, it turns out that Australia's Readymix logo holds the title for being the largest lettering in the world during the 70s to 90s. Creating a strong logo is essential for successful branding, and factors such as color, typography, simplicity, and uniqueness play a crucial role in making a logo memorable. So, whether it's visible from space or not, a well-designed logo can make a lasting impression on your audience.
