The business of logo design is a very complicated and costly affair for larger corporations. There are hundreds of considerations and decisions that need to be made when it comes to designing a logo. Below is a list of some of the most costly logos to design in the history of logos. Check them out below.
Why Logos Can Cost a Lot of Money?
Logos can cost a lot of money to design, because they need to convey the right message and the correct feel, regardless of where they are displayed. Consider this, a logo may be visible on any or all of the below locations:
- Websites
- Print (in magazines or newspapers)
- Television
- Personalised merchandise (which can vary widely from promotional umbrellas, business cards, flashdrives, shirts and more!)
- Billboards
- Building signage
Once the locations are identified, larger companies who can afford to invest in a logo will begin to analyze how the logo is perceived by everyone, regardless of culture, age or background.
The Most Expensive Logos
The most expensive logo was by:
- BP (the petroleum company): Reportedly their logo costed in Australian dollars, $7.75 million dollars. $7.72million was simply to design the logo. (obviously a lot of revisions were done). A further $200million or so was used to actually re-apply the logos throughout their websites, merchandise and building signage.
Amusingly, despite the huge amount of research, Greenpeace was still able to create a poke fun of this logo, using a bird that is stuck inside an oil slick. (it is so hard to please everyone with a logo isn't it?)
- The second most expensive logo in the world was by CitiBank. Back in 51998, the bank paid $1.5million.
- The third most expensive logo in the world is surprisingly an effort by the City of Belfast. Compared to the above 2 examples, the cost of this logo was only $240,000 Australian dollars.
