Sportswear Colours Official Rules

White is officially the colour for Wimbledon. All participants are required to wear white. Other colours are allows in their sportswear kit, however only to an extent. The full rules to the tournament are listed in detail in a 10 chapter "decree." All players need to follow instructions including:

- White coloured sportswear may not include cream colours or "off-white,"
- Other colour trims are allowed, however they cannot be more than 1cm.
- Visible undergarments that are not in white, or change colour due to perspiration are now allowed.

Why White Only

The reason why only white sportswear is allowed in Wimbledon means we have to take a step into the past. In fact way back to the 1800's. Back in those days, Tennis was only one of a few recreational activities available to women. Women were not allowed to seen to perspire, therefore they wore white clothing to conceal sweat.

Later in 1949, the white uniform rule was more strictly enforced, when a tennis player by the name of Betty Hilton, lost a tournament in the final. The reason why she lost according to a leading spokesperson at the time was because she spent too much time thinking about her coloured dress.

The next day after that comment was made, signs were displayed around Wimbledon banning all but white coloured sportswear.

Tennis Players & Endorsements

Today, tennis players and their endorsements are worth a lot of money. In fact many tennis players like to cultivate a "bad boy," image to help them along with procuring more endorsements. However, given between a choice of being banned from playing in the tournament or wanting to be flamboyant, even the most bold players choose to stick with the rules (Nick Kyrgios I don't think you are as bad a boy that you make out to be!).
