Wine is serious business. It conjures up images of class. It’s seemingly the most elegant of alcohols, created in sun dappled vineyards in exotic and beautiful locations to be enjoyed by the wealthy and sophisticated. To be well versed in wine is to be knowledgeable and distinguished. To give a gift of wine, packaged and emblazoned with its subtle and restrained designs, is to give a gift that is refined. As I said, it’s serious business – assuming of course that it’s not just some cheap plonk or a goon bag. I imagine then, that not only is wine taken seriously, but that it is taken most seriously in Europe, particularly in the Southern and Western parts, near the Mediterranean. Which makes it rather surprising that Burger King is releasing a specially made “Whopper Wine” to be sold at their franchised fast food restaurants in Spain.

Burgers and Wine?

That’s right, Burger King, is sourcing locally made wine, branding it with some elegant and understated packaging, and selling these rather sharply designed wine bottles in Spain in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the very first European franchise in Madrid. Quite a surprise from a fast food company, but not the most unique move we’ve seen from the rather adventurous franchise. This blog alone has covered a range of unusual, and most importantly, memorable marketing decisions by Burger King, among which were black burgers, and Burger King Perfume.

Branding that’s Elegant and Simple.

It really is a stylish design though; minimalist and refined. Most clever of all is the use of colour; the green, red, brown, and tan colours layered atop each other evoking the layers of a whopper burger. Positioning it in the place of the “E” in Whopper is also a clever use of space. It just goes to show that a sharp minimalist design can have a powerful look.
