We're all familiar with traditional playing cards, decks with memorable suits including Clubs, Diamonds, Spades, and Hearts. But what if your playing cards didn't look much like standard playing cards, would you still be able to recognise the 4 of Diamonds or the Ace of Spades? One design group set out to create minimalist cards that challenge the norms while still adhering to great design values.

Custom Card Decks With Unique Print Designs

Product and marketing designers Joe Doucet & Partners decided to print promotional card decks that used the absolute minimum number of visual cues to portray the different suit and cards designs. The resulting cards are almost entirely bare, save for insignia in each corner.

Not only are the decks themselves almost entirely bereft of colour, the packaging too is similarly clean and utilises only a diagonal line to distinguish it. While these card decks don't look much like your grandma's card decks, they are still oddly recognisable as traditional cards of old. Each corner, like standard cards, boasts the insignia of the suit as well as the card's number.

Overall while you might have to focus a little more on which card is which at first, these promotional playing cards are exciting as well as challenging. They immediately catch the eye and the unique minimalist design holds your attention making them excellent marketing items. If you're ever lost for an idea, try to strip back the design of your product to its basic elements and let simple typography and lines do your work for you.
