British Guiana One Cent Magenta Stamp

The British Guiana One Cent Magenta Stamp is one of the most famous and valuable stamps in philatelic history. It was issued in 1856 in British Guiana (now known as Guyana), a British colony in South America. This particular stamp is extremely rare, as only one specimen is known to exist today.

The story of the One Cent Magenta begins with a shortage of postage stamps in British Guiana during the mid-19th century. In 1856, the local postmaster commissioned a local printer to produce an emergency supply of one-cent stamps. The resulting stamp featured a simple design with the colony's ship emblem and the denomination "1 cent" printed in black ink on magenta-colored paper.

Due to its limited production and the fact that it was primarily used for newspapers, the stamp was rarely seen or collected. Over time, all known copies of the stamp were lost or destroyed, except for a single surviving example. In 1873, a young collector named L. Vernon Vaughan rediscovered the stamp among his uncle's papers.

The British Guiana One Cent Magenta Stamp has since gained legendary status in the world of philately. It has been featured in various exhibitions and is considered the holy grail for stamp collectors. In 2014, the stamp was sold at auction for a record-breaking price of $9.5 million, making it the most expensive stamp ever sold.

The stamp's rarity, historical significance, and mystique surrounding its singular existence contribute to its immense value and desirability among collectors. The British Guiana One Cent Magenta Stamp stands as a symbol of the enduring fascination and allure of rare and unique philatelic treasures.

Why So Expensive

This stamp is outrageously expensive because of the print in question and the history of it. According to historians the timeline reads something like this:

  • 1856 a Postmaster in South America, Guyana (previously known as British Guiana) according to history ran out of stamps. A new batch was ordered but it was late. So instead he asked a newspaper printer to print him several stamps until the new batch arrived. This $9.84 million stamp was of them and is one of its kind.
  • 1873 a young 12 year old boy owned this stamp and sold it for roughly 6 shillings which is $50 in modern currency. This was the 2nd earliest  known whereabouts of this tamp.
  • Over the next 100 years this stamp has been traded. Amongst its owners was millionaire and convicted murderer John E. du Pont who purchased it for $935k. He later died in 2010 and this sale was in part and parcel part of his estate.
